AS9100 and ISO 9001: Quality Standards for Aerospace Manufacturing

When sourcing parts for an aerospace program, your manufacturing partner’s quality system is not a background detail. Components like structural brackets, flight computer housings, and hydraulic manifolds may need to be produced through a documented and auditable process rather than a supplier’s informal production routine.

Two of the most common quality certifications in aerospace and defense sourcing are ISO 9001 and AS9100. They are related, but they are not the same. ISO 9001 establishes general quality management practices, while AS9100 builds on top of ISO 9001 with aerospace-specific requirements such as first article inspection, configuration control, traceability, and counterfeit part prevention.

What Is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is a quality management system standard used across many industries. In manufacturing, it helps define how a company controls documents, manages processes, identifies risks, measures performance, handles nonconforming outputs, and improves its workflow over time.

For general commercial manufacturing, ISO 9001 can provide a useful baseline. It does not automatically mean the supplier is suitable for every aerospace requirement, but it shows that the supplier has a structured quality system rather than relying on ad-hoc production habits.

What Is AS9100?

AS9100 is a quality management standard developed for aviation, space, and defense supply chains. It uses ISO 9001 as a foundation and adds controls that are especially important when part failure, documentation gaps, or uncontrolled changes can create serious risk.

For aerospace custom parts, AS9100 may affect how drawings are reviewed, how special requirements are recorded, how material traceability is maintained, how inspection records are stored, and how changes are approved. It also places greater attention on first article inspection and configuration management.

How Should Buyers Use These Standards?

Certification should not be treated as the only decision factor. A practical sourcing review should also check whether the supplier understands the part geometry, tolerance requirements, material behavior, surface finish expectations, and inspection plan. For prototype work, the required quality package may be lighter. For critical production parts, traceability and formal inspection records become more important.
